THE 4TH GA CENTRAL MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY INAUGURATED

a Central Municipal Assembly was inaugurated on the 12th of February, 2024, following the successful conduct of the District Level Elections in December last year.

Dignitaries present were the Chief Director at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Alhaji Amin Abdul Rahaman, Regional Economic Planning Officer from the Regional Coordinating Council, Madam Jemima Lomotey, Magistrate, Sowutuom District Court, His Worship, Stephen Tabiri, former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga Central Municipal Assembly, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Lamptey, Municipal Coordinating Director John Owusu Koranteng, Former Presiding Member, Hon. George Adu Darko, Hon. Ambrose Tsegah, President’s nominee as Municipal Chief Executive for Ga Central, Sam Akoto Danso , Chief Technical Advisor, Bernice Chachaah Administrator from Reginal Coordinating Council, Elder Amoh Tobin , NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Anyaa Sowutuom Constituency, Emmanuel A. Allotey, Parliamentary candidate for NDC, ASP Fedrick Tawiah Oppong ,Ghana Police Service (Sowutuom), ASP Richard Kungu, Ghana Police Service (Sowutuom), District Director for Electoral Commission, Maame Efua Yeboah Dadzie and Heads of Departments.

The Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. John Owusu Koranteng, in his welcome address congratulated all Assembly members for emerging victorious during the elections. He urged the newly elected Assembly members and Government appointees to familiarized with the laws of the Assembly and emphasized on the need to have good interactions with other members of the Assembly.

He also stated that, the transfer of power is an essential tool to ensuring developments and decentralization, therefore the need for good partnership which will aid in the development of the Assembly as well as improve security and peace.

The Chief Director at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Alhaji Amin Abdul Rahaman, reading a speech on behalf of the President, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, stated that, the mandate of Assembly members is to deliberate, plan, mobilize resources and make decisions including by -laws to ensure the transformation of the District and Ghana as a whole

He further stated that, the inauguration of the Assemblies marked another important milestone towards deepening decentralization as decoded in Article 35 Clause 6(d) of the 1992 Constitution. This Article he said, enjoins the state to promote decentralization and popular participation in governance by affording all possible opportunities to the citizenry to participate in decision making at all levels of government.

Mr. Abdul Rahaman further stated that, government was now closer to the people than it had ever been in the history of this country due to the decentralization reforms which started in 1998, and had made progress from 110 to a total of 261.

He went on to say that, “As we constitute the membership of the District Assembly, it is envisaged that new ideas and opportunities would emerge to deepen the deliberative, legislative and executive functions of the District Assembly”.

He urged the elected Assembly members to make the Ministry of Local Government policies their priority in their policy formulation and implementation such as (National Decentralization on developmental intervention) and wished them a successful tenure of office.

After the Presidential inaugural address, Assembly members through an election supervised by the Electoral Commission of Ghana elected Hon. Micheal Acquah as the Presiding Member who was sworn in by the Circuit Court Judge, His Worship, Stephen Tabiri.
